For generations, the people of Costa Rica harvested marine turtle eggs for consumption. This is a part of their culture, and the practice was handed down through the ages. Although some of the eggs are good to eat, the larger attraction is the belief that they are a powerful aphrodisiac, even though this has been proven false by the latest science.

Another major challenge facing the turtles, is plastic carried by ocean currents to their nesting beaches. Plastic bags, soft drink bottles, flip flops - literally tons of garbage from North and South America wash up on these shores each year! Not only has ingested plastic been found during recent autopsies of turtles, but these plastics also contain toxins that can be extremely harmful to baby hatchlings.

Sea Turtles have migrated to the shores of Costa Rica to nest on the same beaches where they were born for centuries. Ancient Mayans paid homage to a Great Turtle Mother that guided them home each year to give life to the next generation. Over the past three decades, habitat destruction, over fishing, pollution, and egg poaching have decimated Sea Turtle populations once numbering in the hundreds of thousands. The Catch Conservation Fund is working with several organizations that are helping us reverse those trends.

Once plentiful in the Eastern Pacific, four out of five Sea Turtle species have been reduced to only a few thousand today. The extinction of endangered Sea Turtles will have far-reaching consequences for our oceans, jeopardizing the very food chain we depend on for survival. This might be our last opportunity to prevent a completely avoidable man-made environmental disaster.

The Catch Conservation Fund is dedicated to protecting endangered Sea Turtles and Sharks around the world. We work with local governments and private organizations in developing countries to preserve fragile ecosystems on land as well as at sea. Our first mission is to save the Sea Turtles of Costa Rica.

Hawksbill, Leatherback and Green Sea Turtles are all on the verge of extinction in the Eastern Pacific. Our goal is to bring their populations back to sustainable levels, so our children’s children will grow up in a world full of Sea Turtles for years to come. It is our belief that the modern world can coexist in harmony with nature, so future generations will be able to enjoy all of the wonder and beauty our earth provides.
